Strong performances, new obstacles and emotional highlights characterized this year's spectacle in Graz's Augarten
The GRAWE Grazathlon 2025 is over, and what a race it was! With impressive performances, new obstacles, and true team spirit, Graz once again became a hotspot for anyone wanting to test their limits.
On the two courses – 10 km with 25 obstacles or 5 km with 13 obstacles – thousands of participants demonstrated what "moving forward together" really means. Four new obstacles provided fresh thrills and plenty of sore muscles: the "Rope Climb," the "Wobble Board," "Into the Best," and the "Iron Cube." This year, the race started again in the Augarten, from where it ran right through the city center. The 10 km course led over the "Vorsicht Stufe" obstacle by Energie Steiermark and up to the Schlossberg – a special challenge that once again caused burning thighs this year. After the descent and an extra lap around Lendplatz, both courses merged at the Hauptplatz and ran back to the Augarten together to the applause of the crowd. There, popular classics such as "Wand 4+Panier" and "Monkeyland" awaited, before all finishers crossed the finish line to well-deserved cheers.
This year the Grazathlon was held under the motto “Moving forward together.” And that was exactly what was visibly lived out. Even before the first starting gun was fired, everyone gathered for a minute's silence. Personal video messages from stars like Armin Assinger, Melissa Naschenweng, and Oimara, as well as a live performance by singer Berenice, underscored the emotional power of the event. A collection was also made on site for the official donation account of the City of Graz.
Markus Bretterklieber took the overall victory in the men's race with a strong time of 40:21 minutes, followed by Florian Bärenthaler (43:02) and Stefan Bärenthaler (43:21). Veronika Windisch triumphed again in the women's race with a time of 51:39 minutes, followed by Lisa Christina Pflandl (54:34) and Sarah Leinich (55:34). In addition to the classic Grazathlon, this year's Austrian Championships in Obstacle Run held as part of the event, meaning that both Bretterklieber and Windisch, in addition to their daily victory, also won State championship title took home.
The GRAWE Grazathlon 2025 has proven that sport can do more than just challenge people physically – it can unite, give hope, and send a strong message. The next stop in the beat the city series is in Innsbruck on June 27-28.
